Tool guide

Free Online MP3 to FLAC Converter

Convert one MP3 file into FLAC directly in your browser. FLAC stores the decoded output without further lossy compression, but it cannot restore frequencies or original quality already discarded by the MP3 source.

Steps

How it works

  • Choose one MP3 file up to 150 MB.
  • Preview the source and review its duration.
  • Decode the MP3 and encode the result as FLAC.
  • Preview and download the FLAC output.

Highlights

Key features

  • Validates MP3 input before conversion.
  • Creates a FLAC file from decoded MP3 audio.
  • Avoids introducing another lossy codec in the generated output.
  • Shows FFmpeg progress, source and output previews, duration, and file size.
  • Uses the original MP3 filename as the base for the FLAC download.

Use cases

Common uses

  • Create a FLAC intermediate for a workflow that requires FLAC input.
  • Avoid another lossy encode while editing decoded MP3 audio.
  • Use an MP3 recording in software that accepts FLAC but not MP3.
  • Archive a processed MP3-derived result without further lossy compression.

Notes

Limitations to know

  • FLAC output does not make the lossy MP3 source truly lossless or restore missing audio detail.
  • The FLAC will usually be larger than the original MP3.
  • Only one file is converted per run; batch, bulk, and ZIP conversion are not supported.
  • There is no FLAC compression-level, sample-rate, bit-depth, or channel control.
  • Metadata and cover art are not explicitly mapped and may not transfer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

5 answers
Does MP3 to FLAC improve audio quality?

No. FLAC preserves the decoded MP3 result without new lossy compression, but cannot recreate information removed by MP3 encoding.

Is the FLAC now a true lossless source?

No. The FLAC encoding is lossless, but its audio came from an already-lossy MP3.

Why is the FLAC larger than the MP3?

FLAC preserves the decoded waveform without lossy compression, so it generally needs more space than MP3.

Can I choose a FLAC compression level?

No. The current tool uses the FFmpeg FLAC encoder defaults and does not expose compression controls.

Can I bulk convert MP3 files to FLAC?

No. This converter processes one MP3 file at a time, up to 150 MB.
