Tool guide
Free Online APNG to GIF Converter
Convert one animated PNG or regular PNG into GIF with browser-loaded FFmpeg. The tool reads APNG frames where supported, normalizes output to 15 FPS, scales to even dimensions, and creates a downloadable GIF.

Steps
How it works
- Choose one .apng or .png file up to 80 MB.
- Preview the source image or animation.
- Start conversion so FFmpeg can decode the PNG/APNG and encode GIF frames at 15 FPS.
- Preview the generated GIF and download it when complete.
Highlights
Key features
- Accepts APNG animation and standard PNG input in one converter.
- Uses FFmpeg for frame decoding, GIF encoding, and progress reporting.
- Normalizes the result to 15 FPS with Lanczos scaling and even dimensions.
- Creates a real GIF output with original and converted previews.
- Processes one local file through a browser-first workflow.
Use cases
Common uses
- Create a GIF copy of an APNG for a GIF-focused platform.
- Convert an animated PNG into a format supported by older applications.
- Turn a static PNG into a still GIF when a GIF file is required.
- Preview how full-color APNG artwork looks within GIF format limits.
Notes
Limitations to know
- Only one APNG or PNG can be converted at a time; batch, bulk, multiple-file, and ZIP features are not available.
- GIF is limited to a 256-color palette per frame, so gradients and full-color artwork can show banding or dithering.
- GIF transparency is more limited than APNG alpha, so partial transparency may change.
- Frame delays are normalized to 15 FPS, while disposal, blend, and loop behavior are delegated to FFmpeg and may not match the source exactly.
- Large, long, or malformed animations may exceed browser memory or fail during decoding.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Are all APNG frames converted to GIF?
FFmpeg reads the APNG frame sequence where the file is supported, but timing is normalized to 15 FPS and malformed animations may fail.
Why do GIF colors look different from APNG?
GIF supports at most 256 colors per frame, while APNG can contain full-color PNG frames. Palette reduction and dithering can change gradients and fine color detail.
Will APNG transparency remain?
GIF supports much simpler transparency than APNG. Fully or partially transparent areas may therefore look different.
Is the APNG loop count preserved?
The tool does not explicitly set or verify the source loop count, so exact loop preservation is not guaranteed.
Can I convert multiple APNG files at once?
No. The current converter handles one PNG or APNG file up to 80 MB at a time.
